Perth rapper Drapht starts tour on the Sunshine Coast

ARMED with a silver tongue and a new album, Perth MC Drapht has given up life as a restaurateur to concentrate on rapping on his national music tour.

Starting in Mooloolaba on October 6, the Aussie rap royal will make his way down the east coast before finishing in Alice Springs.

Drapht says he is keen to get back on the road after working in the hospitality business for a few years.

"I just wasn't enjoying the writing process or the industry for quite a while and it just came to a head with my last record and I decided I wanted to start a new leaf,” he says.

Drapht opened and ran a restaurant in Perth for three-and-a-half years and says it gave him the insight he needed about the creative process.

"I realised initially that I started writing music as a hobby and a venting process ... and that was removed when I started living off my music,” he says.

"It's not about just creating a formula and trying to release radio songs per se, it's about getting the stuff off my chest that I really need to.”

Drapht says juggling the writing process of his new album 7 Mirrors and running a business meant he had to sacrifice his social life.

"Hospitality is a non-forgiving industry,” he laughs.

"I couldn't do both things simultaneously and I would find myself just writing at the restaurant, thinking of ideas and doing a lot of research.

"It's good now that the album's out and the restaurant's sold. Though, I got so much time on my hands I don't know what to do with myself.”

The 34-year-old rapper has just returned from a holiday with Brisbane rock trio, Dune Rats, where they filmed the music video for their tune Mexico.

Drapht laughs at even the slightest mention of the name Dune Rats and says the boys' positivity is infectious.

"I've got so much love for those guys ... they're my brothers and I love hanging out with them,” he says.

Drapht is soaking up his time off and setting out for a surf in Bali before beginning his tour here on the Sunshine Coast.

He says he can't wait to get back on the road again and has been rehearsing heaps.
