Pierce by pierce, body art arrives

THEY'RE the popular piercings taking the Sunshine Coast by storm.

Piercing and jewellery business SKINKandy at Sunshine Plaza in Maroochydore has seen the number of people wanting piercings nearly double over the past couple of years.

One of the most unusual trends to emerge has been dermal piercings.

They are piercings that can be placed practically anywhere on the surface of the skin.

In dermal piercing, only one end is visible on the surface of the skin. The other end is embedded in the dermal layer of the skin.

This gives the appearance of having small beads on the surface of the skin.

SKINKandy store manager Kiara Little said the most popular piercings were still nose and lobe piercings.

"We also do genitals, and underneath the tongue, called webbing, and smiley piercings, which is done through a piece of skin under the lip," she said.

"On a busy day we're doing about one piercing every 15 minutes."

Store owner Mark Oliphant said he was preparing to open his sixth store in Toowoomba.

"Over two years we've almost doubled the number of piercings we're doing every week," he said.

"We're seeing some great growth, not just in piercings but body jewellery as well.

"A lot of people are taking pride in creating special pieces. We get a broad mix of people coming in. It's not just for young ladies."
