Street too dangerous for pizza deliveries

A PIZZA outlet has banned deliveries to homes in an Andergrove street because its owners fear for the safety of young delivery staff.

Pizza Power made the decision because of harassment and ongoing verbal abuse from some people living in the street.

The black-listing of Sunita Drive, which leads to Sonata Place residential complex, has resulted in shop manager Lillian Riley being verbally abused and struck by one angry customer from the street who walked to the pizza shop to demand why delivery service had been refused over the phone.

That case went before Mackay Magistrates Court and the offender was fined.

Ms Riley said the man came in "yelling and screaming" pushed the heavy counter and went to punch her in the head but struck her arm instead.

She said they had no choice but to ban deliveries to the street because it had become too risky for staff.

The shop has also blacklisted houses in other streets as no-go areas considered potential trouble and dangerous for staff.

Deliverers encountered drunks, people who refused to pay and, too frequently, copped offensive language and verbal abuse, Ms Riley said.

Staff also copped plenty of abuse inside the shop from some customers and labelled Tuesday night "fight night".

"It's very dangerous. I've been assaulted and my son has been assaulted," she said.

Business had dropped off around the Andergrove shop because of the problem of young groups of people wandering around at night, which intimidated customers, Ms Riley said.

Her son, who owns the shop, said in one assault two angry women verbally abused then attacked him for not taking a pizza to them outside.

One got him down on the ground then kicked him in the groin more than once and stomped on him.

"We have to stand our ground. Why should a 14-year-old have to get this abuse," Ms Riley said.

"We only ask for people to be polite but there are many loyal customers who are terrific, who make it worthwhile."
