Police probe shooting

A MAN has been hospitalised after being shot in Robina on Saturday night.

Police were called to an address in Cedarwood Cr around 2.15pm after reports a 25-year-old man had been shot in the shoulder.

He was taken to Gold Coast Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police were speaking with witnesses and investigations were continuing at the scene late yesterday afternoon.

The report comes just days after an announcement by mayor Ron Clarke rejecting claims the Gold Coast is Australia's crime capital.

His comments came after a 60 minutes television report claiming the crime rate was spiralling out of control, painting a grim picture of life on the glitter strip.

"I'd give it (the report) a minus five out of 10," Cr Clarke said.

"The story was mainly based around a random shooting - the only one that's occurred, I think, on the Gold Coast."

However, Queensland Police Service records provide information on at least five Gold Coast shootings since May of this year, including the murder of Mermaid Waters man Colin Lutherborrow in Broadbeach in July and the death of Detective Senior Constable Damian Leeding, who was shot while responding to an armed robbery at Pacific Pines in May.
