Man in custody after three hour police incident on Bribie
UPDATE 5.10pm: POLICE have arrested a man following a three-hour-long incident at Bongaree.
A nearby resident said he believed a mother and her young son lived in the Winston Dr apartment where the incident occurred.
Police believe the man was the only person in the unit.
A police media spokesman said officers set up a cordon around the area at about 2pm and negotiated with a man before he eventually surrendered shortly after 5pm.
Officers at the scene have given the go ahead for Winston Rd to be reopened and the rest of the cordon lifted but police say delays will continue "for a while".
Previously vehicles coming on to Bribie Island over the Bribie Island Bridge were diverted along Sylvan Beach Esp.
EARLIER: POLICE are urging motorists to avoid the Bribie Island Bridge if possible, with long delays in the area thanks to a nearby incident.
Police are attending an incident at Winston Dr, Bongaree.
A police media spokeswoman urged people to avoid the area and Bribie Island Bridge if possible due to traffic congestion.
She said police were first called to the scene just before 2pm.
A nearby resident said he was taking his daughters - aged 13 and 16 - for a walk to avoid the area.
"Police said they should be safe here but can not guarantee anything," he said.
"There's a young bloke in there. I imagine he's got a gun otherwise they would not have dogs here."
