Police suspect man in canoe shot by air rifle

POLICE are investigating after a man sustained a head injury on Tallebudgera Creek.

Initial investigations indicate around 1.50pm the man was paddling a canoe on the creek at Burleigh Heads with a woman when he was struck on the head by an unknown object.

The pair returned to shore and called for assistance.

The victim, a 25-year-old Seventeen Mile Rocks man, was treated at the scene for a non-life threatening laceration to the side of his head.

The man reported hearing a 'crack' immediately before the impact with police believing an air rifle or similar weapon may have been involved.

At the time of the incident the canoe was around 20-30 metres off the north bank of the river near the intersection of Elanora and Awoonga drives.

Police are appealing for anyone who may have either heard a gunshot or who may have witnessed anyone acting suspiciously, in particular on the north side of the creek, to contact Crime Stoppers.

The woman in the canoe was not injured.

Investigations are continuing.

Anyone with information which could assist with this matter should contact Crime Stoppers anonymously via 1800 333 000 or crimestoppers.com.au 24hrs a day.
