DEPRESSION caused by pre-marital sex has been linked to the violent stabbing death of a young woman in Brisbane who was due to undergo a pre-arranged marriage.

News Corp reports the engineer accused of murdering the Singaporean student found her on an Indian marriage website and met her once in her homeland.

Police allege Meena Narayanan, 27, was repeatedly stabbed by Senthill Kumar Arumugam, 31, at the Travelodge hotel at Brisbane's Upper Mount Gravatt early on Tuesday.

Arumugam allegedly said he had sex with his victim in Singapore, which had caused the pair depression because being a Hindu, it was culturally wrong to have sex outside marriage.

The Indian national allegedly stabbed her multiple times in the abdomen, covered her face with a pillow, and slit her throat.

Social media tributes for the Singaporean woman flowed on Wednesday, as shocked friends heard the news of her death, Fairfax reported.

Two friends who studied with Ms Narayanan at Singapore's Temasek Polytechnic described her as a "smile-filled person" and "very bubbly".

An emotional Paul Louis Liew said he had known Ms Narayanan for more than a decade. He said they had grown close during the last seven years, and regularly chatted on Skype to catch up.

"I don't think I can ever put Meena's life into words," he said.

"She was a joy to be with... there's so many things she said to me that made me laugh and cry at the same time."

Fairfax reported that Meena's friends were not aware of any plans for her to be involved in a pre-arranged marriage.

Mr Arumugam is in hospital with suspected self-inflicted stab wounds. He remains under police guard.

He is due to face the Brisbane Magistrates Court on May 5 for a mention hearing.
