TEMPERS flared on Tuesday as protesters confronted three people accused of starving two husky dogs, outside the Gladstone Magistrates Court.

Hollie Belinda Cornwell, Sean Joseph Heineger-Finley and Shane Richard Heineger, who have been charged with animal cruelty, encountered about 40 protesters with placards as they left the courthouse after having their cases adjourned until 9am on October 2 for mention.

Each was granted bail.

"Shame on you" and "justice for Lady" refrains greeted the accused as they left the court.

Water was thrown on Mr Heineger-Finley and Mr Heineger ran into a protester.

"What do we want? Justice! When do we want it? Now!" the protesters chanted.

Animal advocate Judy Whicker said the protest was about letting people know the community would not tolerate animal cruelty and that there needed to be stiffer penalties for offenders.

"Animals don't have a voice and so we are the voice of the animals," Ms Whicker said.

She said the large turnout proved the Gladstone community cared about animal welfare.

Protester Lisa Warman said she attended the rally because she loved animals.

"I don't know how people can even think about being cruel to animals," Ms Warman said.

"Any normal person would know it's the wrong thing to do."

Mr Heineger called the protesters "dogs" as he was driven off.
