BRIDGET Todd is still trying to understand why someone dumped a litter of four six-week-old puppies near a busy Mt Perry Rd, leaving three of them to be run over by cars.
A family member of Miss Todd's, Kevin, was driving to Mt Perry Wednesday last week, when he decided to pull over at the rest stop just off the main road leading into the town.
"He turned into the rest stop and saw something lying on the road," she said.
"He thought they were birds."
Miss Todd said Kevin only realised what was in the middle of the road once he started to slow down.
"As he slowed down, someone overtook him and went straight over them," she said.
She said Kevin had watched on in horror as the car drove over the two puppies, killing them instantly.
"There was no way to save them," she said.
"So he buried them out there."
Miss Todd said Kevin buried the three puppies - one had already been struck down before he got there - and went to freshen up in nearby toilets.
"He saw a cardboard box next to the toilets," Miss Todd said. "As he walked out, he saw a little puppy pop his head out of the box.
"He took the little one and he's called, Lucky."
Miss Todd said the family was angry the pups had been abandoned near such a busy roadway.
"Kevin was shattered - he can't get the picture out of his mind of seeing the two pups being run over," she said.
Kevin works away, so Miss Todd and her partner took Lucky, a Kelpie-cross, to get checked.
"It's weird - he's been properly fed, he wasn't skinny or malnourished," she said.
"(The owner) just took them and dumped them.
"What happened to dogs being man's best friend?"
