Funding grants to be announced in lead up to election

THE Federal Government will stagger the announcements of regional funding grants over the coming months in the lead-up to the election.

Infrastructure Minister Anthony Albanese announced two grants for western Sydney under the final round of the Regional Development Australia Fund on Tuesday.

Mr Albanese said funding was secured for a new sports and community centre in Penrith and a youth centre in Fairfield in the New South Wales capital's western suburbs.

The announcements were not the first for Round Four of the RDAF grants, and would not be the last, with successful projects in 55 committee areas yet to be announced

Regional Services Minister Catherine King last week announced multi-million regional infrastructure grants for several projects in Victoria.

Previous rounds of the grants have been announced in a single statement, or on a state-by-state basis.

However, in the lead-up to the election, the government is understood to have decided to announce the latest round of grants in a series of media appointments.

It is understood the final round of the announcements would be made on a committee-by-committee basis.

A statement on the Department of Regional Australia, Local Government and the Arts said the final rounds of announcements "will be made progressively".

"A consolidated list of projects will be published when announcements for RDAF Round Four are complete," the statement reads.

The funding for western Sydney projects comes after previous announcements of funding in Independent MP Rob Oakeshott's home town of Port Macquarie.

Other previous Round Four announcements were for projects in Nationals MP Mark Coulton's western NSW electorate and in areas of Melbourne's eastern suburbs.
