Renault's resurgence: new Megane hatch arriving from $22,490

RENAULT is in need of a boost in Australia - and positively for the French brand, reinforcements are on their way.

The all-new Megane small hatch arrives in dealerships next week with more sophisticated tech, sportier body styling and a slight increase in starting price.

The base Life manual model - the only available with a stick shift gearbox - is $22,490 before on-roads, up from the outgoing entry-level Authentique's $22,000.

Australian new cars sales are heading for yet another record year, but 2016 has so far seen Renault's figures drop off by more 7% from this time in 2015.

Reasons to be cheerful include the recently launched Koleos medium SUV and this new fourth-generation Megane, meaning the brand has two fresh players in two of the most competitive segments in Australia.

Renault Australia is bringing in four variants of the new Megane and two turbocharged petrol engines. Life, Zen and GT-Line models use a 97kW/205Nm 1.2-litre four-cylinder, while the range-topping GT features a 151kW/280Nm 1.6-litre four-cylinder .

Renault quotes economy figures of 5.5L/100km for the Life manual and 5.6L/100km for all other 1.2-litre cars with dual-clutch auto. Sportier GT cars are all dual-clutch autos and return 6.0L/100km.

The latter also feature a four-wheel steering system mated to a Sport-engineered suspension, ideal for you Renault-driving back-road heroes to enjoy before the Renault Sport editions arrive.

The new cars are longer and lower than their predecessors, and have a wider front and rear track too.

Inside is a seven-inch landscape screen, while GT-Line and GT cars score a new Multi-Sense system via the screen to personally adjust the Megane's dynamic responses. Optional on the two top cars is a tablet-like 8.7-inch portrait screen that can be pinched or zoomed like a tablet.

New Megane prices before on-roads are $22,490 (Life manual), $24,990 (Life auto), $27,490 (Zen auto), $32,490 (GT-Line auto) and $38,490 (GT auto), and go on sale on September 19.
