Golden age actress Lauren Bacall dead at 89

LAUREN Bacall, considered one of the ultimate icons of glamour, has reportedly died age 89.

Celebrity website TMZ reports Bacall suffered "a massive stroke" at her home.

The 1.74m star born Betty Joan Perske began her career as a model, later evolving to the screen after marrying director Howard Hawks.

At just 19, she starred opposite Humphrey Bogart in To Have and Have Not in 1944.

She would marry Bogart the following year.

During this golden age of Hollywood, she would star in Confidential Agent, The Big Sleep and the thriller Dark Passage all before 1948.

In 1953 she appeared alongside Marilyn Monroe and Betty Grable in the smash hit How to Marry a Millionaire.

She was known for her deep, sexy voice, "cat-like eyes" and has been named one of the 100 Sexiest Stars in film history by Empire Magazine.
