Generosity stuns after sick boy’s bike is stolen

HEARTLESS thieves stole little leukemia sufferer Ben Jessen's pride and joy while he was undergoing emergency surgery.

But Gladstone's generosity over the past few days has renewed the faith of the four-year-old's family.

City residents have donated cash, and one retailer gave the lad a new $1300 Kazuma quad bike.

The family was distraught and infuriated to find the mini quad bike belonging to the boy had been stolen.

Mum Renee Jessen said the family returned home from emergency surgery in Rockhampton on Monday night to find the treasured item had been stolen.

"We just felt defeated," she said.

"After everything we've been through recently - it was just the last thing we needed."

After posting about her family's anger on social media, the Gladstone community quickly stepped up to make things right.

Jane and Richard Robinson, from Mild 2 Wild Motorcycles, gave the child a new bike.

"It's priceless seeing him smile," Mrs Robinson said.

"He's such a little gentleman and we are just happy to be able to put a smile on his face."

Gladstone residents dropped into the Toolooa St store on Tuesday making donations to be handed to the Jessen family.

The Jessen family members were overcome with tears as they were handed $400.

"It's completely overwhelming," Mrs Jessen said. "I am emotional and speechless.

"It means a lot that so many people care about our family."

The stolen bike was beyond repair when recovered by police on Tuesday.

A 33-year-old man has been charged with stealing and will appear at Gladstone Magistrates Court later this month.
