Returning athletes get hero’s welcome

COMMONWEALTH Games gold was on show at Maroochydore RSL last night as the Sunshine Coast's contingent received a big welcome home.

Young fans rubbed shoulders with gold medallists Jodie Kenny, Remy Fairweather and Melanie Schlanger along with Caboolture's Taylor McKeown and 200m breaststroke finalist Tessa Wallace.

"It's great to represent the Coast and Australia and come home to a welcome like this," Wallace said.

Sunshine Coast Sports Federation awarded plaques to the Coast contingent, which was our biggest and most successful at a Commonwealth Games.

In total, Coast-produced athletes won six gold medals, one silver and three bronze.

The event also paid tribute to Sunshine Coast Sports Federation chairman Matt Horder's parents, who died in the MH17 plane crash.
