Rhonda takes flight on her big day for the best fall
THIS is one awesome grandma.
Rhonda Barbary, of Peregian, celebrated her 80th birthday by deciding it was time to jump out of a perfectly good aeroplane.
"It was exciting, exhilarating and I will never forget it," she said.
Rhonda steeled her nerves and joined a Skydive Ramblers team on Saturday as they climbed to 14,000ft.
"Sitting on the edge of the plane I did think to myself why on earth I was doing this, but it is something I have always wanted to do," she said.
"I didn't really like the free-fall part too much but once they opened the parachute it was absolutely beautiful.
"I had nearly everyone I have ever known there cheering me on when I landed.
"I went home to have a bit of a sleep straight after the jump before we went out for dinner."
Rhonda said she didn't regret leaving the thrill of skydiving until her 80th birthday but she probably wouldn't do it again, either.
"They got me down safely and I didn't land in the water, thank God, because I can't swim. Besides slightly defective hearing, which is slowly getting better, I got down in one piece," she said.
Rhonda's three daughters were at Stumers Creek at Coolum to watch her land safely, and the celebrations are still continuing through the week with friends.
"We are going out for drinks a few times this week," Rhonda said.
