Running 1000 miles for Daniel

Billy Tindall would not only walk 1000 miles, but he will run it as he attempts to raise $100,000 for the Daniel Morcombe Foundation.

When most people decide to raise money for charity, they might run the Bridge to Brisbane - but Tindall has decided to run from Melbourne to the Sunshine Coast.

The five-time Golden Gloves boxing champ from Caboolture has thrown away the mouthguard and taken up ultra-distance running in recent years.

He'll put that training to the test as he covers the mammoth 1800km (or 1100 mile) route during a four-week period leading up to next year's Day for Daniel.

Billy, 26, said he was inspired help The Daniel Morcombe Foundation after the birth of his first son last year put things into perspective.

"I've followed the Daniel Morcombe story like most people have and it stood out because he was the same age as me and it's so close to home," he said.

"I always wanted to do something to help, but never really knew what it was and after my son was born last year I had a greater appreciation.

"I always respected what Bruce and Denise (Morcombe) were doing to keep kids safe, so my wife and I sat down and came up with this."

Billy has just completed the Caboolture 24-hour ultra-distance run and the Bribie Island 50km this years, but will have to cover 60km each day if he's to make the October 28, 2017 deadline.

He's currently covering 120-250km per week in preparation and said his boxing background has made it easier for him to transition into ultra-distance running.

"I enjoy the challenge of it and the Day for Daniel gives me something to aim for, which is important for these sort of things," he said.

"I actually find boxing has helped a lot with running; it's all very similar as it's individual sports.

"Whenever you have those tough times training or when you're competing there's no one else to blame but yourself. I think the mental strength needed is what draws me to it."
