175,000 students sign up for anti-bullying day of action

ROCKHAMPTON is taking a stand against its violent youth.

As a 14-year-old girl prepares for her court appearance next week over a violent bashing, a Rockhampton woman is doing what she can to change the bullying culture that dominated national news last week.

Nekina Whap has created a group called Say No To Bullying/Youth Violence in Rockhampton, and hopes to educate people on the long-term effects of bullying.

On Thursday she wrote: "This group is to promote awareness, for parents and community members … I find it sickening that people videotape fights and do nothing.

"Don't stand by, educate, and let's all take a stance."

Meanwhile, Queensland school students are uniting in record numbers for the fourth annual National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence on March 21.

"More than 175,000 students from 305 Queensland schools have so far registered to participate," he said.

"That's 55 per cent higher than registrations this time last year - across all Queensland schools."

"Last year Queensland led the nation with around 500 schools and almost a quarter of a million school children participated in activities on the day."

Mr Langbroek said Queensland schools continue to be proactive and work with students in a positive way to plan special assemblies, newsletters, quizzes, poster competitions and art galleries, as well as making music, games and video clips promoting anti-bullying.

"Registrations continue for another five weeks, so I strongly urge all Queensland schools that haven't already registered for this year's event to do so now through www.bullyingnoway.gov.au," he said.
