Seeney signs off on GC resort

A $1 billion mega-resort has been given the tick of approval on the Gold Coast.

Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning Jeff Seeney signed off on the Jewel Resort development, which will be built on Old Burleigh Rd in Surfers Paradise and consist of three high-rise buildings including a resort hotel, apartments, offices and retail spaces.

The development is expected to create more than 3000 jobs, including 2500 construction and 670 hospitality positions.

Mr Seeney said the approval came with 124 conditions.

"I did not rush this decision and I extended the decision timeframe in order to make sure I was making the right decision for the community and the state," he said.

"I have included conditions requiring architectural certification to ensure that the design philosophy and design intent evolves as approved.

"The resort hotel component is also an integral part of the development and I have conditioned the approval to ensure that this occurs in any first stage of construction.

"Conditions also require landscaping and acoustic treatments to ensure the potential noise and privacy impacts on neighbouring properties are reduced."

Mr Seeney said the development would be welcomed by the Surfers Paradise construction and tourism industries.

The development already gained approval from Gold Coast City Council but two parties lodged an appeal against council's decision in the Planning and Environment Court.

However, the minister's recent decision cannot be appealed.
