Send a postcard to William

WILLIAM Peach, 3, has a special project- with the help of his mum Pippa, Will is learning about geography in a fun way.

He's collecting postcards from around the world - so far he has 18 cards after a month of collecting.

The little explorer has received cards from Perth, Cairns, Kuala Lumpur, New Zealand, Texas, Thailand, Thursday Island, Scotland, Mackay, Melbourne, Cyprus, Luxembourg, Budapest and Dubai.

Mrs Peach said her son was learning about the world thanks to the family project.

"He's learnt where he lives in relation to the world and can pick it out on a map," she explained.

"He's also learnt about other places."

The idea for the project came from a family friend.

"A girlfriend of mine Anna Lloyd from uni did it with her two boys," Mrs Peach said.

"I immediately loved the idea and Will and I sent her kids a postcard and filed the idea away for when Will was old enough."

The Peaches are recording the experience through pictures, a giant world map and the postcards.

Mrs Peach said they were also writing back to senders if they had an address.

Will, who is a keen train enthusiast, said his favourite card so far was of a steam engine.

Mrs Peach said Will checks the post and gets very very excited when there is postcards for him.

"We go inside and he runs straight to the map and looks at it," she said.

"He loves finding where the postcard comes from."

Will places a sticker on his large map of where the card comes from.

Mrs Peach admitted a three-year-old's attention span was short but so far he was enjoying the project.

"I just hope he learns something, sometimes it gets a bit overwhelming, trying to teach your kids things, though I think this has a fun spin on geography," she said.

If you would like to write to William Peach send the postcard to via the DailyMercury, PO BOX 5666, Mackay Mail Centre 4741.
