Celebrity in awkward interview over Today shake-up rumour

The Today Show has been plagued by rumours it's headed for another talent shake-up, and now the host in question has added fuel to the fire with a bizarre TV interview.

Former AFL star Shane Crawford, who was a finalist in this year's I'm A Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here! and will appear on Dancing With The Stars tonight, is reportedly set to replace veteran sports journalist Tony Jones, who took Tim Gilbert's job after the downfall of Karl Stefanovic.

When asked by Studio 10 host Sarah Harris if he would be "setting the alarm early" for his next career opportunity, Crawford responded awkwardly before saying he needed to "have a good think about it this week".

"There's lots of rumours but you know what, there's lots of rumours in life," he awkwardly responded.

Crawford stumbled on his words when he was asked the prickly question.

"I don't like getting up too early I can assure you that.

"We'll just wait and see. My heart's not telling me yes, so I need to have a good think about it this week."

While that pretty much sounds like he's been offered a gig on a silver platter, a Nine statement sent to news.com.au poured cold water on the rumour.

"We are happy with the Today presenting line up and there are no plans to make changes to our hosting team," the statement said.

Crawford, 44, is a father of four boys, who he shares with his partner, Olivia.

According to a recent New Idea report, Nine executives like that the Brownlow Medal winner has massive family appeal as well as impressive sporting achievements.

Crawford, who has reportedly already been offered the job, was said to be reluctant to accept because he'd have to make the big move from Melbourne to Sydney.

The AFL legend played 305 senior games for the Hawthorn Football Club, and has enjoyed a successful TV career in his retirement, regularly appearing on several reality programs including The AFL Footy Show, Getaway and Postcards.

The revamped Today show, featuring Georgie Gardner and Deborah Knight as co-hosts, has been a ratings disaster since Channel 9 unveiled its new look panel last month.

Just 197,000 viewers across the five metropolitan capitals tuned in to watch the first episode compared with 266,000 for Seven's rival morning show Sunrise.

And it's only gotten worse. Today experienced an all time low when a dismal 177,000 people tuned into the program on Wednesday, February 6, compared with 300,000 who chose Sunrise.
