Singers battle as The Voice heats up

THE highly anticipated battle rounds of The Voice Australia started tonight, and the culling was brutal with some viewer favourites including Mahalia Barnes already being sent home.

The four judges lead by example, opening the show with a group performance of U2's One Love.

In the battle rounds, the celebrity coaches must chose pairs of their team members to battle in a sing off, after which only one singer will continue in the competition.

Each coach will end up with teams of six going into the live shows, when viewers will get to vote for their favourite singers.

Seal told his team it would come down to "who wants it more", and the battles started with Seal's big guns.

Not surprisingly, young blues singer Karise Eden out-sang Perth mum Paula Parore in Amy Winehouse's Back to Black.

Underdog Ben Hazlewood overcame his self doubt to beat musical theatre veteran Chris Ninni and keep his spot on Joel Madden's team.

Delta Goodrem pitted her former backing singer Glenn Cunningham against rocker Matty Chaps, tasking them with performing Maroon 5's hit Moves Like Jagger.

It was experience versus hunger, and Cunningham's experience narrowly won the day.

Keith Urban chose a Kelly Clarkson song, Mr Know It All, for his two powerhouse voices Jaz Flowers and Diana Rouvas.

Rouvas's accessibility helped her win the "diva off".

Young singers Mitchell Thompson and Fatai Veamatahau brought it down a knotch with an emotional performance of Love The Way You Lie.

It was Veamatahau's tearful performance that won her a spot on Seal's team.

Adam Hoek put up a good fight against Rachael Leahcar in a beautiful rendition of Somewhere Over The Rainbow, but Goodrem couldn't give up her "shooting star".

Both Abbie Cardwell and Adam Martin failed to impress the coaches with their performance of The Fray's Heartbeat.

It was the only lackluster duet of the night, and Urban chose to stick with Martin for his "intrigue".

The show closed with the most explosive battle of the night between Mahalia Barnes and Prinnie Stevens.

The friends brought the house down with their powerful performance of Tainted Love.

Madden consulted his twin brother Benji but went with his gut to pick Stevens over Barnes.

The battle rounds continue on The Voice tomorrow on Channel 9 at 8pm.
