SOAP BOX: Dog owners need to be responsible

I'M tired and my neighbour's dog is entirely to blame.

I love dogs, have two myself and believe every family benefits from man's best friend.

But dogs are like children, they have to be cared for and leaving them alone at home at night just doesn't work.

They get lonely and they use their voices throughout the night in a desperate search for I don't know what.

It drives me barking mad though.

From about midnight till 3am we were kept awake by the never-ending, grating, annoying, frustrating, mental-making woof, woof, woof and woof.

I swear it could be used by the military as a new form of torture.

Like the dripping of a tap, it goes on and on and on, but at different tempos.

I tried to block my ears, but my pillow was little help.

It can be hard to have a pet that barks when alone in the day, but it is just plain rude to have a pet and leave it alone to bark at night!

I didn't want to yell out as that would wake the one neighbour who wasn't awake and wouldn't have much effect. It would probably only encourage it.

It was obvious its owners had gone away and left their pooch instead of paying for kennels or pet-sitters.

I could complain to the council, but that would involve a rigmarole when the issue will be resolved when the owners get home.

I do worry if it happens again tonight, some person might be driven to the extreme to hurt the pet when the owner is to blame.
