SOAPBOX: No more deaths this week please
TODAY is my birthday and I'm making my wish early.
I know you're not supposed to tell anyone what you wish for when you blow out the candles on the cake, but in this case, I think I'm going to have to.
Please let no one die today.
We've seen too much horror already this week.
Words can't describe the tragedy that occurred at Dreamworld on Tuesday. I know there were a lot of attempts to describe it; Google "Dreamworld” and hundreds of articles will pop up.
As if the incident itself wasn't horrible enough, we've seen every aspect of it - and the reporting of it - picked over in the traditional media and more viciously on social platforms like Facebook.
It left me feeling pretty low.
But there was no reprieve; fewer than 24 hours later the details of a fatal motorcycle crash in Noosaville trickled in. He collided with a car, his bike caught fire, he suffered a head injury, paramedics performed CPR for 20 minutes. He died.
And less than a day after that news broke about a man being killed when his ute slammed into a tree near Gympie and burst into flames.
This week has been a shocking reminder of how fragile our lives, our human bodies, really are.
Sometimes we have no control over the things that happen, but sometimes we do.
Please, let every driver stop a little longer, take a little more care, and stay alive today. It's my birthday wish.
