Award-winning songwriter spared to tell safety tale

A NEAR-death experience driving home from Bluesfest in 2008 prompted award-winning singer-songwriter Morgan Evans to get behind the bstreetsmart campaign to promote driver safety during the school holidays.

The 28-year-old went into a micro-sleep at the wheel while driving home from the 2008 festival.

"I was asleep while driving 110 kilometres an hour with cruise control on a winding country road at 4.30 in the morning," he said.

"It mustn't have been long that I was asleep but I woke up to a massive crash.

"I slammed on the brakes as soon as I came to and checked my girlfriend."

When Mr Evans looked back, he realised he'd drifted across to the other side of the road, narrowly missing a telegraph pole.

The car had flown off the embankment on the other side of the road, crashing through a barbed wire fence before skidding 50m through a paddock.

"It was a miracle," Mr Evans said. "We should have died about five different ways that night but we both walked way.

"It's a night I think about most times I get in a car."

With many drivers embarking on long journeys in the upcoming Easter school holidays, the bstreetsmart ambassador is keen to remind drivers to take it easy on the roads - especially on longer journeys.

"Everyone knows what to do to be a safe driver," Mr Evans said. "But we all need that reminder before we get in the car. If everyone was more aware, there'd be far less crashes on our roads."
