Speedster stops only after crash

MISTY Lee Stevans twice evaded police on the Sunshine Motorway, reaching speeds of up to 160km/h one rainy morning.

She was unlicensed, unregistered, uninsured, high on drugs and had false number plates and bald tyres.

Police only caught up with the 28-year-old on July 19 last year after she slammed her vehicle into an off-ramp and was stuck in the wreckage.

Stevans appeared in the Maroochydore Magistrates Court via video link and pleaded guilty to 16 charges including dangerous driving and drug possession charges.

Prosecutor Nichale Bool told the court Stevans was "well aware" the police were attempting to pull her over and speed off.

"She only stopped because she crashed," Ms Bool told the court.

"She admitted to police she took cannabis and meth prior to driving. And she knew her tyres were bald."

Ms Bool sought a 10-month prison sentence.

The court heard of Stevans' negligence behind the wheel when she "felt her tyres skid across the road, shut her eyes, covered her head and took her hands off the wheel, and just went for it".

Magistrate Ron Madsen read over her two pages of traffic history and agreed jail time was the only appropriate sentence.

"Speeding away from police is never a good idea. This is how accidents happen," Mr Madsen told the court.

"You are very lucky to be alive - unbelievable, really."

The court heard of the numerous chances Stevans had been given - including bail and probation orders.

"Breached, breached, breached. You have done very little to comply with orders," Mr Madsen told the court.

"You have had the opportunity to address your issues and have failed miserably. It is a crying shame."

Stevans, who had already served four months' jail for a suspended sentence, will stay behind bars for a further seven months. She will be eligible for parole in two months.
