Five artists to submit designs for Pt Cartwright Reservoir

A SIGN writer, a lecturer in indigenous art and a member of the Kabi Kabi are among five artists selected to create design concepts for the Pt Cartwright Reservoir artwork project.

The project is part of a broader Unitywater project to place an artwork chosen by the community on reservoir exteriors to deter graffiti and improve the appearance of these large concrete structures.

Other reservoirs that have been transformed with artworks are in Caloundra, Ferny Hills and Peregian Beach.

A shortlist of suitable artists was chosen by a panel featuring representatives from Unitywater, Sunshine Coast Council and public art installation agency Jugglers Art Space.

"The artists were selected as being the best fit for the job based on their experience and their ability to undertake large-scale public artworks," Unitywater community relations specialist Kate Cash said.

"The five we have chosen are diverse and talented, and all have strong connections to the Sunshine Coast."

Jugglers Art Space director Peter Breen said he was impressed with the artists.

"The project has attracted a high calibre of local artists from a range of artistic disciplines keen to leave their mark on this massive canvas, which will become a talking and visiting point for years to come," Mr Breen said.

"I have met with each of the finalists on site to brainstorm potential themes, collaboration and application options.

"We see this project as another part of a worldwide art movement that is taking cities and laneways by storm. It has the potential to highlight the best local talent, a community voting process and to tell something of the local indigenous and iconographic stories of the region."

The artists will submit their design concepts to Unitywater in January.

"We will then present those concepts to the community and ask for the public to vote for their favourite between 25th January and 8th February," Ms Cash said.
