WARWICK paceman Mark Steketee couldn't stem the flow as captain and opener Unmukt Chand led India to a six-wicket victory over Australia in the ICC Under-19 World Cup final in Townsville yesterday.

Chand carried his bat for a magnificent unbeaten 111, including six sixes and seven fours, as he combined with Smit Patel (62 not out) to secure India's third title.

Steketee (1-47) had been one of Australia's most consistent bowlers and scored an early breakthrough for the hosts after dismissing Indian opener Prashant Chopra for a duck.

Those moments of joy were few and far between though as Chand put the Aussie bowlers to the sword.

Steketee was called on for his second spell with India's batsmen set and fast closing in on Australia's 225-run total.

And the pressure proved too much for the 18-year-old as India smashed 15 off his last over to all but have the match wrapped up.

Both Chand and Patel gave Australia chances with the former dropped on 38 and 84 by wicketkeeper Jimmy Peirson and captain Will Bosisto respectively.

But the Aussie skipper was philosophical about his team's defeat at the post-match presentation.

"It would have been nice to finish on a winning note obviously but ... India are a great side, I think they played better than us on the day and they deserved it," Bosisto said.

"Maybe we didn't help ourselves out with a few dropped catches and things like that but that is cricket."
