Lightning dazzles the Toowoomba sky

DARLING Downs has been treated to a spectacular lightning show and loud bursts of thunder with some areas also receiving much needed rain.

The storm came after the Bureau of Meteorology cancelled its storm warming for the South-East Queensland. 

"Severe thunderstorms are no longer affecting the Southeast Queensland area (east of Dalby from Rainbow Beach to Stanthorpe)," the BOM said via a statement which was followed by the sky being lit up in Tooowoomba.

Goombungee, 20 mins from Oakey, was smashed with rain and pea size hail, contributors on Higgins Storm Chasing's Facebook site reported.


EARLIER: HAIL storms have been reported in Warwick as the system responsible for the wild weather makes its way north.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a renewed warning saying that the storm is expected to hit the area south of Toowoomba and Helidon to the city's west at 6.20 this evening. 

"Large hailstones, damaging winds and heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding are likely," the BOM's statement read.

"Hail has been reported from the Warwick and Allora areas."

Residents are being warned to move their cars under cover and away from trees, secure loose outdoor items and seek shelter indoors. 

EARLIER:THE Bureau of Meteorology has released a serious storm warning for Toowoomba and Southern Downs.

It warns that, at 4.20pm, severe thunderstorms were detected on the weather radar near Warwick. These thunderstorms are slow moving. They are forecast to affect the area northeast of Warwick by 4.50pm.

Hail has already been reported in the Warwick area. 

Large hailstones, damaging winds and heavy rain may lead to flash flooding.
