FAMILIES and tradespeople will be spoiled for choice at the huge new Bunnings Warehouse Maroochydore on Dalton Dr, which has a massively expanded outdoor and gardening section, complete with cubby houses, and a three-lane drive-thru for tradies to pick up their timber.
It took a year to build the new $48 million warehouse on Dalton Dr Maroochydore, but just six weeks ago it was a hollow concrete shell, says complex manager Kevin Harris.
Mr Harris gave the Daily a look at the new DIY wonderland yesterday. The enthusiastic boss has worked with the company for 11 years and said the new Maroochydore warehouse was a major highlight of his career.
Of the giant garden centre, he said: "even team members coming in here for the first time had tears in their eyes - it's just so big."
The warehouse is a whopping 15,000sq m, with 71 aisles and gardening and timber sections three times the size of the former store.
"It's two football pitches long and one and a half pitches wide," Mr Harris said.
Staff achieved the impressive feat of placing an estimated 5,500 pallets full of goods on shelves over the past four weeks, in preparation for the opening on Monday.
The Sunshine Coast community is invited to celebrate the new warehouse at a family fun afternoon - including fireworks and a visit from Peppa Pig - next Friday, October 23, from 5pm.
The former Bunnings Warehouse on the corner of Maroochydore and Broadmeadows Rds (at Sunshine Homemaker Centre), will now close. The Daily understands this store will be refitted for other businesses.
Bunnings is joined at the Dalton Dr site by Officeworks, which shares the same parent company, Wesfarmers, and a suite of new commercial tenancies with street frontage.
Howards Storage World Maroochydore shared a building and car park with Officeworks at Plaza Pde until it moved. Franchisee Michael Keegan said yesterday he was "making a decision as we speak" about whether to stay or go somewhere else.
"It's always an advantage to have foot traffic and since they've left there's definitely been a downturn," he said.
Mr Keegan said he was waiting for an offer to be finalised by a landlord at another site, but Howards Storage World would continue to be located at Plaza Pde "at least" until mid-December.
Mr Keegan said he could not yet confirm whether the new location would be at the new commercial tenancies in the Dalton Dr complex.
