Teams prepare to 'Just Tri It' at Caloundra

TROPHIES, accolades and the most important bragging rights are the focus of teams preparing for Sunday's inaugural Caloundra Community Bank Triathlon Business Challenge.

The 'Just Tri It' race, organised by Caloundra Triathlon Club, is first of two races designed for rookies to get a taste of the tri-sport.

For the first time a teams Business Challenge event has been introduced, where workmates combine to cover the 600m swim, 20km cycle and 6km run.

Two teams in the running come from Pumps United - a provider of dewatering, pump rental and environmental services. Office manager Leanne Baarslag (swim), technician Matt Hawkins (cycle) and advisor Jess James (run) form team Vintage, while workshop co-ordinator Richard Grey, state manager Gerard Baarslag (cycle) and fitter Phil Kean (run) together are team Classic.

Pumps United has a nine-person office, with three already heavily involved in cycling - having just completed the Buderim 9 and they are currently training for Cycle of Giving next month.

"We are looking to do a more family friendly event, the Just Tri It event really appealed to us,” James said.

"Our team members are all at different levels of fitness and are using the challenge as a extra incentive to step up their fitness campaigns. For some it's the first time stepping back into the pool to swim laps since they taught their kids, and getting the rhythm and the breathing right is a weekly challenge”.

"Pumps United don't intend to win the event, but we are going to use it to spend some quality time with family and friends with some friendly respectful rivalry thrown in for good measure”.
