The one holiday secret locals should know

HOORAY, its school holidays and I have great reason to be excited.

I've got leave again and I have the most awesome holiday planned.

Guess where I'm going this time?

Nope, we're not going on another trip around Australia (although that was nice).

We are also not flying to Bali, Thailand or any exotic destination.

For the first time in too long a time we are staying at home.

And I plan to enjoy every single minute of being able to holiday on the glorious Sunshine Coast.

I've been guilty over the years of the "need to get away" syndrome.

We are almost always preparing to head off somewhere else.

I struggle to relax in the comforts of my own home and always focus on what needs to be done instead of what I've got.

Not this time.

Yes, we have projects we want to complete, but I also have a list of goals I want to achieve in my own backyard.

We hope to do a few days of the Sunshine Coast hinterland trail, lots of cycling, swimming in the sea and chilling on my deck with a good book and a brew of sorts.

I plan to switch off the computer, disconnect from Facebook and social media and reconnect with the people that matter.

One thing you notice when you are travelling is what people say when you tell them where you live.

"Coolum Beach, I love that spot, you are so lucky to live there," is the most common reply.

And guess what, those people are right.

I am extremely privileged to call Coolum home.

So if you see some crazy woman rushing into the sea as if she hasn't seen the ocean for months, don't laugh.

It's probably just me making the most of where I live.

And if you are a tourist who has travelled up here for the school holidays, I hope you also have a fantastic time enjoying the most beautiful beaches in the world.

But if you live here, do yourself a favour this holiday.

Make sure at some point you take the time to enjoy it.
