The richest Sunshine Coast suburbs revealed

You may have known this all along but the latest tax figures are proof the Coast’s richest people live in some of the swankiest beach suburbs.

The Australian Taxation Office data, based on the 2017-18 tax returns of 14.3 million Australians, shines another spotlight on the division between the coast and the hinterland.

It shows residents in postcodes including Sunshine Beach, Alexandra Headland and Buddina were among the wealthiest.

While Kin Kin, Cooran and Kenilworth were at the bottom of the list.

THE HIGHEST EARNERS

According to the data, residents at Sunshine Beach, had the highest average taxable income of $64,274, followed by Alexandra Headland with an average taxable income of $62,058.

The third average highest, earning $61,543, reside in postcode 4575, taking in coastal suburbs Buddina, Birtinya, Warana, Wurtulla, Parrearra, Minyama and Bokarina.

However, the figures are a far cry from the nation’s highest earning postcode.

Postcode 2028, Double Ba in NSW, had the highest average taxable income, at $242,428.

THE LOWEST EARNERS

The lowest earners found themselves in 4571, which includes Kin Kin and Cosmo, with an average taxable income of $39,201, followed by Cooran with $42,583.

The third average lowest, earning $43,786, reside in postcode 4574, which includes Kenilworth, Obi Obi, Gheerulla, Moy Pocket, Kidaman Creek and Coolabine.

The data also shows that the nation’s poorest earners live in small towns in Queensland.

Postcode 4732, which takes in Muttaburra and Tablederry in central-west Queensland, has the lowest average taxable income at $14,681.

Income under $18,200 was tax-free in 2017-18.

Up to 19 per cent of income between $18,201 to $37,000 was taxed; 32.5 per cent for earners between $37,001 to $87,000; and 37 per cent for incomes between $87,001 to $180,000.

OTHER TAKE OUTS

The data also showed surgeons were the highest paid workers in the nation, making an average $402,582 in taxable income.

Up to 73 millionaires did not pay any income tax, which was up from 69 in the previous year.

More than 1.3 million landlords declared a net loss on their investments, showing that negative gearing remained popular.
