Thunderstorm warnings for Qld

2PM: THUNDERSTORMS could cause heavy rainfall and flash flooding in Brisbane, Ipswich, Redland, Gold Coast, Lockyer Valley, Moreton Bay, Scenic Rim and Somerset areas.

At 2:20 pm, severe thunderstorms were detected on the weather radar near Laidley, Hatton Vale, Somerset Dam and Toogoolawah, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

"These thunderstorms are moving towards the east to northeast," the BoM website reported.

"They are forecast to affect Ipswich, Lake Manchester, northern Lake Wivenhoe and Dayboro by 2:50 pm and Brisbane CBD, Beenleigh, Logan City, Cleveland and Strathpine by 3:20 pm.

"Damaging winds, very heavy rainfall, flash flooding and large hailstones are likely."

NOON: SEVERE thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging winds, very heavy rainfall and flash flooding over the next several hours in parts of the Gulf Country district.

Locations which may be affected include Burketown, Mornington Island, Normanton and Karumba, according to the Bureau of Meteorolgy.

Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging winds, very heavy rainfall, flash flooding and large hailstones over the next several hours in the Central Highlands and Coalfields, Central West, Darling Downs and Granite Belt and parts of the Capricornia, Wide Bay and Burnett, Maranoa and Warrego and Southeast Coast districts. Locations which may be affected include Warwick, Toowoomba, Dalby, Roma, Charleville, Emerald, Longreach, Clermont, Kingaroy and Stanthorpe.

Severe thunderstorms are no longer occurring in the Northwest district.

Emergency Management Queensland advises that people should:

* Move your car under cover or away from trees.
* Secure loose outdoor items.
* Avoid driving, walking or riding through flood waters.
* Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.
* Avoid using the telephone during a thunderstorm.
* Beware of fallen trees and powerlines.
