A TOOWOOMBA father was killed yesterday after the truck he was driving crashed south of Warwick.

Bob McKillop, 60, was driving north on the New England Hwy when the B-double semi-trailer left the road, rolled and ignited about 3.30am.

Mr McKillop had been transporting a load of cooking oil from Sydney to Toowoomba.

Darling Downs district officer Inspector Mike Curtin said a coronial investigation into the crash had started.

"The truck has left the road, colliding with a guard rail," he said.

"The vehicle appears to have overcorrected and left the roadway on the western side; it's rolled and the vehicle has ignited, incinerating both vehicle and driver.

"The investigation will cover all aspects applicable to the fatality, including fatigue, and relevant heavy vehicle transport driving duties.

"It's being investigated by Warwick police with the assistance of forensic crash investigators from the Darling Downs district."

Inspector Curtin said the driver had spoken to some people six hours earlier in New South Wales.

He said it was tragic to see another fatality on the district's roads.

"This is the second fatality for the calendar year for the Darling Downs police district, in addition to our 30 fatalities last year, " Insp. Curtin said.

"We're just urging the motoring public to take extra care and not become a statistic."

The crash was the fifth truck crash on Darling Downs roads since Monday.
