Top blogger steps up to fight child sexual abuse
CHANTELLE Ellem won't let anyone hurt her girls.
The Tweed mother-of-two has mastered the world of blogging; now she's an ambassador for White Balloon Day.
Inspired by the social media selfie, those taking part in White Balloon Day this year are asked to think about who they're protecting when it comes to child sexual abuse.
For Ms Ellem, author of popular blog Fat Mum Slim, a selfie was an accessible way to get that conversation started.
About three years ago, she shared her own story of child abuse.
"It was really hard to share but I felt like I had a responsibility to do so," Ms Ellem said.
"It's not fun to talk about this topic but it happens.
"I want to make (my daughter) feel she can talk to me about anything."
Ms Ellem said she'd had a huge response after talking about her experiences.
"People do really connect with it," she said.
"It is such a taboo topic."
Bravehearts founder and CEO Hetty Johnston has also got on board the selfie campaign.
"Child protection is everyone's responsibility and we all have children in our lives who we love and want to protect," Ms Johnston said.
"Child sexual assault is preventable. By helping us we can put a stop to it. Let's do this as a nation and together we can exact change and make a difference to so many."
White Balloon Day will take place on Friday, September 12.
