Tough going for batsmen in Coast cricket fixtures

CRICKET: A good batting day brought mediocre scores to Division 1 fixtures as teams weakened by Schaeffer Shield commitments struggled for runs. Caloundra, untouched by absence, headed the totals with 186 at Gympie.

The Lighthouses have needed leadership for the largely inexperienced cohort, and Chris Briody provided the persistence as the Gold bowlers restricted scoring but were forced to whittle away the wickets. The number three bat entered at 18, left the field with a hamstring injury once established, then came back with the tail to remain unbeaten on 67 at the end.

The struggle for runs by the visitors was demonstrated by the figures of Luke Cartwright, who took 4/5 runs from his 12.4 overs, and Troy Ashton's 2/17 off 18 while the Lighthouses occupied the crease for 96 overs. Gympie's chase had a tiny start at 0/19 off 5 overs by stumps.

Maroochydore's innings against Tewantin-Noosa hit a major roadblock when the board went from 0/29 to 4/29 when Michael Thomson, back to first division in the absence of Jarrod Officer and Toby Poole, renewed acquaintances. The Swans plummeted to 6/48 before the bottom half of the list supplied some grit as they did in round 1.

Tom Olsen, Chris Welsh and Kev Schultz pulled the tally up to 153 before Codey Rzeszkowski had the tail stumped. After day's end with the Thunder 3/84, visiting skipper Gerard Flegler will need to conjure up an early breakthrough with Jarrod Officer and Andy Kratzmann returning to bat.

Nambour youngster Hayden O'Connor had a day out at Grant Road, top scoring with 36 in the Cutters'149 against Caboolture then reaping 3/24 as the Snakes moved to 4/90 by the close.

The home side welcomed back Andy Schablon for a late start to the season, but it was the old firm of Parkinson and Anderson who did the damage with the ball, the opening Matt taking 3/24, while Matt the spinner bought up his 250th wicket for the Snakes in his 81st game, at an average of 10.6. Anderson's 5/12 from 20 overs became his 11th haul of five or more wickets.

O'Connor claimed the prize scalp of Glen Batticciotto on the way to the Snakes' 4/90 at stumps, with Schablon and Ryan Baker at the crease.
