Tourism dollars well spent with visitor numbers soaring

SUNSHINE Coast tourism generates more than $2.5billion annually for the region, comprises 17% of the region's economic activity and accounts for 20% of jobs.

For example, for every dollar spent on promotion, the Sunshine Coast receives back $15.50 in visitor spending.

A not-for-profit organisation, Sunshine Coast Destination Ltd (SCDL) is the State Government's official regional tourism organisation for the Sunshine Coast.

The results over the past year demonstrate SCDL has delivered strong benefits across the region, including double-digit domestic (10.9%) and international (9.4%) visitor increases - the highest growth figures of any coastal region in Queensland.

These positive figures contrast sharply with competitor destinations such as the Gold Coast.

They were achieved through the launch of dynamic new national and international marketing campaigns, a powerful digital marketing strategy which has grown engagement across channels by 40%, and innovative promotional strategies to highlight the diversity of the region.

Something the public may not realise is that SCDL manages eight Visitor Information Centres (VICs) across the Sunshine Coast region.

Later this year, we will warmly welcome 100 VIC employees and volunteers from across the state for the Queensland Information Centres Association (QICA) 2015 Annual Conference.

Local knowledge, guidance and a friendly welcome can make all the difference to visitors and our SCDL volunteers truly are the frontline to the region's tourism industry.

Volunteering is a great way to meet interesting locals and travellers, while representing the Sunshine Coast.

We are currently seeking volunteers for our Mooloolaba and Sunshine Coast Airport centres.

The VICs operate seven days a week and shifts range from three to three-and-a-half hours.

If you require more information or are interested in becoming a volunteer, contact Emily via or call 0458 788 285.

Simon Ambrose is CEO of Sunshine Coast Destination Ltd (SCDL).
