Twin snakes hatch after mum's months at building site

FORGET slippery stairs, heavy lifting, noxious chemicals or sharp edges, one Woodgate workplace has been dealing with a hazard of a much different kind - an eight foot python and her clutch of eggs.

Project manager of the Woodgate Beach Houses development Roger Lewin said the crew discovered the huge python a few months ago under a pile of timber.

"We realised it was her home and saw she had laid a number of eggs so we just worked around her," Mr Lewin said.

"We like our wildlife in Woodgate Beach and it's up to the community here to look after it as much as we can."

Mr Lewin said up until recently, the mother snake was not a problem and even provided some entertainment.

"There's been a couple of guys onsite who are a bit funny about snakes so there were a few tricks throwing pipes on the ground in front of them," he said.

Mr Lewin said this week the timber stack could no longer be avoided during landscaping so Snakes DownUnder came to relocate the python and her eggs.

"She wasn't overly aggressive and she was quite co-operative when he put her and the eggs in the box to move," Mr Lewin said.

"The very next day I got an email saying they had started to hatch and one of the eggs had twins inside which they said it pretty rare and he hadn't seen before.

"We were glad we could do our bit for the environment and they were moved successfully."
