Uni campus to go up in flames to prepare for bushfire season

FIRE crews are preparing to burn a section of bushland at the University of the Sunshine Coast.

Crews will conduct the burn of almost one hectare of heathland on the far eastern side of the University campus, near Claymore Rd, between 9am-noon on Wednesday August 23.

Nearby Chancellor Park Estate residents have been notified.

The action will be supervised by USC as part of its fire management plan for the 15ha habitat, which was successfully relocated to the campus from Bundilla when a housing estate was built years ago.

The burn-off aims to reduce potential bushfire fuel and hazards for the upcoming bushfire season, and to maintain the health of the bushland that contains some rare and endangered plant species.

Fire crews will burn a mosaic pattern of burnt and unburnt areas within the bushland, to help reduce the intensity of any future wildfires and provides favourable conditions for natural heath and forest regeneration.
