US win Spanish rematch

A KEVIN Durant led United States has overcome a gritty Spain 107-100 points in the men's basketball gold medal match.

A rematch of the Beijing final, the Americans lead at every break but could not shake the Spaniards until the final three minutes of the last quarter.

Heavy favourites throughout the tournament, the US team contained a formidable cast of NBA superstars including Kobe Bryant, LeBron James and top point-scorer Kevin Durant (30 points, nine rebounds).

And with those names firing early, the US team made a blistering start, taking a 35-27 point lead into the first break.

However, the Spanish - led by Los Angeles Laker forward Pau Gasol (24 points, eight assists, eight rebounds) - stole the limelight in the second quarter, landing some clutch buckets to reduce the gap to just one point at halftime.

The third quarter was a seesaw of an event, the Americans looking likely to storm away only for the Spaniards to rally  and take a lead of their own.

But despite landing massive blows against each other, the quarter was called a draw and the two teams were sitting on a knife's edge, once again, separated by a single point.

However, come the big moments, come the big names, and with the gold medal on the line, the American's galaxy of stars did not disappoint.

James landed the first bucket before Bryant (17 points, two assists) and Durant took over, giving the US a slight break in the final quarter.

But the Spanish remained tough, that was until NBA MVP James gave the Americans belief the game was starting to fall their way.

First he drove through a Spanish red sea to land a two-point hammer before nailing a long range effort, a three-point play which spelled the end of any Spanish resistance.

Spain continued the fight, but the US team had the break it needed, finally emerging victorious and continuing its dominance on Olympic courts.

Russia claimed the bronze medal after beating Argentina 81-77.
