Vet teaches kids old dog tricks

GOD loves creatures great and small, and yesterday 57 Nambour Christian College Prep students learnt about how to care for some of them.

Prep teacher Shona Diggines said the education program was run by the Australian Veterinary Association and featured Palmwoods Veterinary Clinic practice manager Brett Stone.

A Sunshine Coast Council representative also spoke about rules and responsibilities of owning pets, pet health and the role of vets in the community, safety around animals and welfare of animals.

"They were learning all about being responsible pet owners from the Sunshine Coast Council, about dog registration, micro-chipping, cleaning up dog poo and keeping dogs on the lead," Ms Diggines said.

"Mr Stone talked about caring for your pet, vaccinations, heart-worming and how to look after your pet at home with feeding and lots of love."

Ms Diggines said the students "loved it", especially the hands-on learning, which followed on from their classroom studies.

"The unit of work this term is about God's animals. We have a pet shop in the classroom and are learning about different animals.

"Days like this are the best learning: practical and fun, something a bit different."

The Australian Veterinary Association's Pets and People Education Program is Education Queensland-accredited and provides primary school students with the skills and knowledge they need to care for animals safely and responsibly.

Program education officer Trevor Morrison said 30,000 students and 400 schools across Queensland were taking part in the program.
