WINE REVIEW: It's raining gold at the Leiths' Passing Clouds

PASSING Clouds was the name given to the vineyard that Graeme Leith planted over old goldfields diggings in Bendigo in central Victoria in 1973. The passing clouds promised rain but usually delivered none, yet the brand forged a name with shiraz and cabernet sauvignon. In 2010, Graeme's son Cameron took over the operation. He planted pinot noir and chardonnay vineyards in the steeper, cooler Macedon Ranges and shifted the winery south to the spa tourism township of Daylesford while continuing to honour the big reds from Bendigo.

Fools On The Hill, Chardonnay, Macedon Ranges, 2015

Some said the Leiths were fools to plant the vineyard on such a challenging site, but this rich creamy wine has aromas of nuts, peaches, roast figs, arrowroot biscuit and fennel. Palate of macadamia, cream and lemon. Finishes dry with briny oyster shell.

Fools On The Hill, Pinot Noir, Macedon Ranges, 2015

Earthy, mulchy aromas with dark cherry, pink peppercorns, dried red currants, camphor and a smoky note. Smooth yet slightly soupy palate with fresh oak, cherry jam, rhubarb and brown spices. Subtle grip to finish.

A veritable summer berry salad: with red currant, raspberry, blueberry and blackberry and youthfully sweetened out with pink marshmallow fluffiness and made serious with chocolate ganache oak. All voluptuous, sumptuous and silky up front with spiced blue, purple and black fruits. Moreish.
