Woman on $1m quest for cancer

WHAT would you do with $1 million?

Vanessa Wyder would give it to cancer research - and she's on a mission to do just that.

The two-time Hodgkin's Lymphoma survivor has been travelling Australia for the past eight months to raise money for 10 cancer research grants.

Vanessa said many people were aware of cancer, but she intended to raise money through her mostly solo road trip to fund a better cure.

"The current treatment options are so debilitating," she said.

"There must be another way."

Vanessa said her own treatment at 25 weakened her so much her mother had to shower her.

Already she has raised $54,000.

The brave 27-year-old's journey began when she returned to her Melbourne home from hospital in January and Jayco offered to loan her a caravan for a year.

From there Vanessa came up with her slogan: "One girl, one year, one motor home, $1m target."

Since then she has travelled South Australia, Western Australia, the Northern Territory and now she is heading down the east coast of Australia.

Vanessa said during her stop-over in the Beef Capital yesterday the response she received from the Rockhampton branch of Cancer Council Queensland was the best so far.

"On the road you see so many people doing amazing things," she said.
