Would you support an outdoor cat ban?

CANBERRA is considering a blanket outdoor cat ban but should we?

ABC reported earlier this week that Canberra residents may be banned from letting their pet cats outside following recommendations for a 24-hour city-wide cat containment policy.

It's currently mandatory to keep cats indoors or secure in outdoor enclosures in all new suburbs of the city.

The recommendation considers the danger cats pose to vulnerable species.

"Cats can roam quite a significant distance and they predate on small animals like frogs and birds," Conservation Council ACT director Clare Henderson told the ABC.

The background paper being considered by the ACT Government said cat containment was most effective if in-force 24 hours a day.

Despite the push down south for a 24-hour cat containment policy, Sunshine Coast Council said it had not considered the option of an outdoor cat ban.

RSPCA Queensland spokesman Michael Beatty said he had no problem with cats being kept indoors but he encouraged people to think about investing in an enclosure so their cats can spend some time outside.

He urged everyone to keep their cats inside at night.
