SURFING: Victoria's Xavier Huxtable beat some of the nation's best teenage board riders at Julian Wilson's invitational competition on Sunday, amid a format similar to world tour events.

And the talented 15-year-old has aspirations of eventually competing on the sport's biggest stage.

"It was amazing, getting the experience of what it's like to do a CT (Championship Tour) event and I hope to be there one day and doing it," he said.

Huxtable showed his potential at Yaroomba, with some strong displays against some hot competition, in the cut-throat format.

"I was lucky enough to be on good waves all day and get through my heats," he said.

"It was a long day and I managed to keep my form throughout the heats and was able to win it."

After a solid 2017, he's eager to further develop his skills in 2018, with appearances in Pro Junior and Qualifying Series events and a focus to become more consistent with his aerial game.

He will also will head to Snapper Rocks in March to watch and learn from the professionals, including Peregian Beach's world number three Wilson, at the tour's season opener.

"I watch Julian in pretty much all of his heats on the CT," Huxtable said.

"He's an amazing surfer, with how composed he is through his heats, even if he needs a big score at the end."

Meanwhile, Wilson praised Huxtable for his efforts at Yaroomba.

"He had a really good day. He had great wave selection and surfed very consistently," he said.

"There was lots of good surfing. It was good to watch."

Wilson selected 12 of the nation's most exciting under-18 prospects, including local products Zane Assink (Yaroomba) and Cooper Davies (Sunshine Beach), to the competition, which was part of the inaugural two-day Julian Wilson's Serious Fun Weekend, with Hurley.

"All the kids invited have a future in the sport," he said.

Wilson hopes to have the contest again next year.

As a reward for winning this year's edition, Huxtable will head to Indonesia with Wilson and they will have a section produced in Wilson's next web edit and an entry into the Oakley Battle Clip Competition.
