Young guns win international event in China

FOOTBALL: A Sunshine Coast youth team has toppled some tough international opposition to win an invitation tournament in Xiamen, China.

The squad, which consists of Sunshine Coast Football and Sunshine Coast Fire players, played pool games and finals during a 12-day trip.

Sunshine Coast Football secretary Brad Lloyd was delighted with the result.

"I'm very impressed and what a great opportunity it was for the kids from the Coast," Lloyd said.

"They didn't really have time to train too much together ... full credit to the coaches Scott Grimshaw and Iain Dalton. What they've managed to do with the boys during the last couple of weeks is outstanding and really good for the Coast.

"From what I've been told there were quite a few talent scouts over there as well so to perform at a high level against good-quality opposition in front of people who are looking for talent ... they've definitely exceeded all expectations."

Sunshine Coast Council has a friendship city agreement with Xiamen and facilitated the squad's participation in the event.

Many of Xiamen's sister cities had teams at the under-18 carnival.

They included some of the top youth sides in Asia, as well as squads from Europe.

Lloyd said the Sunshine Coast's reputation would have likely been enhanced at the international event.

"Our side was made up of mostly local kids from local clubs so the result speaks highly of how well our community football is going at the moment and how strong the local competi- tions are and how strong the zone is," he said.

"And not only are they over there representing Coast football, they are also representing the Coast as well."
