Young Rockhampton mum slams MP over service closure

A MEMBER from the newly closed Girl's Time Out Young Mum's group has written a letter condemning Capricornia MP Michelle Landry over a lack of support.

Jemma Kirwan (pictured) criticised the MP for failing to look after the people of a particular area; and had a broader criticism of the govern- ment after the Young Mum's program that operates within Girls Time Out was not successful in securing continued funding. The program provided support and services for young mothers as they navigate through new parenthood.

Ms Kirwan challenged Ms Landry to inform the public of where the funding had gone.

In a press release last week, Ms Landry reassured the community that whilst funding was not secured, the case was still being looked at by the Federal government.

"I have had discussions with GTO about a gap in services for teenage mothers (12-16 years). This is an alarming age to be a mother and in many cases Child Protection officers are involved in casework. I continue to discuss their request for funds in this area with the Minister for Social Services Scott Morrison," she said.

"This case is still being looked at. The best outcome is for this program to receive a new contract. But at this point I am unable to pre-empt any outcome. The Minister is taking advice from the Department of Social Services."

The MP also said $300,000 in funding was provided to Girls Time Out to be paid over a two-year period.

Ms Landry said that both federal and Queensland agencies were working behind the scenes to secure a solution.
