Car crash and drowning may be linked: Police

POLICE are investigating a link between the drowning of a 19-year-old girl off Marcoola Beach and a nearby car crash involving a 21-year-old man.

Senior Sgt Coolum Hardy Wirth from Coolum Police said they were looking into reports the pair had met in Mooloolaba just hours before.

The traffic crash occurred on David Low Way in Marcoola about 3am.

Police said the car was travelling southbound when the driver, from New Zealand, lost control on a left hand bend and collided with a parked vehicle.

He was airlifted to the Royal Brisbane Hospital in a critical condition.

The body of the girl was discovered about 4.45am on Sunday.

The 19-year-old had recently moved to the Coast from Tasmania for study.

Police said there were no suspicious circumstances in the drowning.

Police said they were waiting to speak with the driver to wake from his coma.
