Lucky fan snaps up Oprah's bag at garage sale

HUNDREDS of people have flocked to Australia Zoo to check out a garage sale with a difference.

Thousands of dollars were raised on Saturday at the annual Great Garage Sale to fund treatments and projects at the zoo's Wildlife Hospital.

A spokesperson said the garage sale, which featured a signed Louis Vuitton handbag owned by Oprah Winfrey, was the greatest yet at the zoo.

The classic handbag netted $3250 on its own.

"We are thrilled so many people could come down and support the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital, and practise recycling at the same time," the spokesperson said.

"While we don't yet have a final figure as to how much we raised, we know that it was a successful event that will provide much-needed funds to help sick, injured and displaced wildlife."

The 24-hour, seven-day-a-week facility has treated more than 53,000 native animals in its 10-year history, many of which have been koalas at a cost of between $1200 and $5000 each.
